- Jennifer Joseph, Assistant Superintendent of Administration of Iberia Parish School District
Reacting to an unexpected and dangerous incident, such as an active shooter event, is something no Pre-K to a 12th-grade administrator, teacher, staff, student, or parent hope never to experience.
Thinking how to keep yourself and others safe during a workplace violence incident of that magnitude, which may occur anywhere around the world, is paramount to maintain the safety and security of our communities. Especially within a Pre-K to a 12th-grade institution where education should be the most important aspect of the instructional training.
To maintain a balance of education, safety, and security, Iberia Parish School District held three situational awareness training sessions on March 7 and March 8 at Westgate High School’s auditorium.
“The Safety Awareness Training provided by Fidelis was very informative and timely for our staff,” says Jennifer Joseph, Assistant Superintendent of Administration of Iberia Parish School District.
“The training included information of what to do for an active shooter when you are in social situations, as well as when you are in a school setting. It was a great first step and confirmed the need for additional professional development for our schools and the need for additional table top talks to be held at each school. We quickly realized that our schools are not inconsistent in what is being practiced and implemented for intruders,” says Jennifer.
Fidelis NA, LLC delivered the private training sessions empowering 250 of Iberia Parish School District administrators, teachers and staff on a comprehensive awareness and preparedness curriculum. The curriculum included strategies to ensure the team has the tools to remain proactive in the face of unknown risks plus equipped the staff with strategies to be reactive.
“We cannot mitigate every risk, but we can control the controllable,” says Luis A. Ramirez, Founder of Fidelis NA, LLC. “This entails remaining proactive and prepared to recognize warning signs, threat indicators, recognize the physiological effects of perpetrators and studying prior cases that involved these incidents.”
“Ongoing training increases our muscle memory on how to recognize these warning signs and how to respond accordingly to incidents,” says Luis. “The response has to be fluid and option-based. It cannot just be a single option. Organizations must continuously drill and practice with your team at all levels to work out the kinks on the practice field. The goal is to ensure people build muscle memory to engage in the option they choose. Once they commit to that choice, they must have a positive mental attitude.”
